Why Your Business Needs a Blog

September 03, 2014 by Allison Carter

Your business needs a blog.

We know.  In an ever-changing digital world where you are now being asked to get on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+ and who knows where next, this can seem overwhelming.  But the truth of the matter is that a blog can do a LOT for your website and, by extension, your business.

Consider, for a moment, these statistics provided by Scott McKelvey:
  • Companies that publish at least 15 blogs per month get five times more traffic than those that don’t blog. Small businesses with 1-10 employees see the largest gains by posting more often.
  • Companies nearly double their sales leads by increasing blogging frequency from 3-5 times per month to 6-8 times per month.
  • Companies that blog once or twice per month generate 70 percent more leads than those who don’t blog at all.
If that still doesn't convince you, read these statistics, from Social Media Today:
  • 61% of US Consumers have made a purchase decision based on a blog post.
  • Small businesses with blogs generate 126% more leads.
Obviously, blogging matters.  Hard numbers prove this.  When your business blogs regularly, even if that isn't every day, the rewards can be huge.

As the numbers above demonstrate, an active blog generates more leads for businesses.  And, afterall, leads are what drive sales.  (Although make sure you couple your lead generating blogging with a solid Automated Marketing System.)

How does blogging generate all this potential business?

Understand that businesses who blog, who have new, fresh content on their pages, enjoy more Search Engine Optimization (SEO) power.  Google likes websites that are providing a lot of relevant and new content based on their industry's topics and keywords.

Also, Google likes to see a lot of pages on a website.  By blogging, you increase the amount of your content and your website's indexed pages in compound numbers.  You can see up to 434% more indexed pages with a blog.  This is great!

Blogs give you more social media capital.  When you have relevant, good articles to share on your social media channels, people follow you.

These days a consumer expects a business to know about their industry and be a thought leader.  They want to buy from a company they trust and believe is an expert.  You can position yourself as such by proving your knowledge through your blog.  70% of consumers learn about a company through blogs posts instead of ads.  Now you can control your message.

In short, taking a little time every week to craft a smart blog post can help your business grow more than you can imagine.  Try it!
