Top SEO Tracking Tools

September 29, 2014 by Allison Carter

If you are a small business, you probably know that SEO, or "Search Engine Optimization," matters for your website.  (If you aren't sure why, read our article about what SEO is and why it matters.)

In order to make sure your business is seeing SEO results from the work you put in to your website, it is important to track your website's statistics and performance.

The good news is there are many companies and services out there to help you.  By spending a little time signing up for a service, installing code on your website, and going in once a month, you can see where you are getting results.

Of course, you will need to hire the professionals (like us) if you want to get in-depth analysis and see quick results with your SEO and website statistics, but there are some minimal things you can do to kickstart your work.

Here are some SEO tracking tools we recommend:

Google Analytics
www.google.com/analytics
This is a must-have.  Google Analytics provides easy-to-use bar graphs, statistics, and user behavior in a detailed and impressive way.  You can be more powerful by understanding what visitors are reading and how they are getting to you.  If you run a Google AdWords campaign, you can track its performance here, too. Google Analytics is free.

Google Webmaster Tools
www.google.com/webmasters
Google Webmaster Tools crawls your website and provides alerts as to any duplicate content and broken links.  These are extremely important to fix immediately as search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo will "punish" websites with these registry errors.  Google Webmaster Tools is free.

Moz
moz.com
Moz is a great one-stop place to see everything combined on one dashboard.  Moz tracks social signals, traffic, duplicate content, broken links, and more.  While some users complain that its graphs are harder to understand, others prefer this presentation of the content.  Moz has two versions: a free and a pro version.

SEM Rush
www.semrush.com
If your business is really ready to invest in serious SEO services, SEM Rush is the highest ranked SEO tracking tool out there.  There are 3 different pricing levels available, each with an accompanying level of services.  SEM Rush offers multiple competitive URL comparisions, organic and paid search analysis, keyword research, and more.  It is a product worth an investment if you want to see serious tracking of your SEO.

Bonus SEO Tip
Head to Pingdom to test (for free) your URL's page speed.  When it comes to optimizing for search engines, page speed matters a lot!  Make sure you know how fast your site is loading and where there are any bottlenecks.
