A "Do-able" Social Media Plan for 2012

March 26, 2012 by Kristi Robison

Since my last blog post, I have been very busy putting together our social media plan for 2012 (on top of my other regular duties).  I have gone back and reviewed what successful things we did for our clients last year and based my plan on a combination of proven activities. I’ve barely had time to keep up with American Idol this year! However, all the hard work paid off, and we officially have a social media plan in place for the year.

The first thing I did was create some long-term and short-term goals:

Long-Term Goals

  • Gain followers

  • Follower interaction

  • Mentions

  • Blog interaction

  • Blog on social media

  • Interact with customers

Short-Term Goals

  • Gain followers

  • Retweets

  • Editorial calendar

  • Pinpoint target audience

The next thing I did was go into our social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ and update our profile pages with our new address (we moved recently), our new logo (we’ve been busy) and our “About Us” statement that is sprinkled with our keywords. I also signed up for a free HootSuite account to help push out our communications.

There were also a lot of other details in plan, but I don’t want to bore you with paragraphs of text.  The final result of the plan was an internal editorial calendar that we have committed to as a team.

Editorial Calendar

  • Monthly posts planned for Facebook and Twitter, and LinkedIn if revelant

  • Evaluate print publications editorial calendars to determine what hot topics they will be writing and therefore will probably be tweeting/facebooking about. Those industry pubs might have hashtags we can use in our tweets. We will also leave space on our editorial calendar for breaking news or retweeting.

  • Once a month blog posts by our staff

  • Once a month newsletter that will focus on educating our audience and showcasing our services (you can sign up for our newsletters ).

That’s probably enough information to digest for this month! Check back next month, as I plan to talk about “How to Develop Content for Social Media & Blogs”.

Now, back to American Idol! Thank goodness for DVR!
